Recent JCSS Initiatives in Training, Fellowships, and Research
In addition to a number of ongoing research and training programs, several new JCSS initiatives are designed to begin reconceptualizing the field. The medieval Russian history workshop has stressed interdisciplinary analysis of early Russian society and promotes new analytical and comparative methods. The goal of the workshop is to promote innovation by challenging existing paradigms, with particular attention to research incorporating issues of gender, economy, intellectual life, and significance of non-Russian interactions with Muscovite society, and the integration of theoretical perspectives from anthropology, sociology, semiotics, literary theory, and social history.
The project on âReconstructing the History of Imperial Russiaâ was initiated to stimulate new research and new theoretical approaches in the study of the period. This project will bring together a small working group of senior scholars to explore new conceptualizations and set an agenda for future conferences and workshops. The history of the imperial period assumes new political significance today as Soviets look to the past in order to understand the present and seek models for the future.
The new workshop in sociology and anthropology was modeled after successful workshops in Soviet domestic politics, Soviet and East European economics, and Soviet popular culture and literature. The workshops are designed to counteract the isolation felt by young scholars in these disciplines and to enhance scholarly communication and mentoring between senior and junior scholars. Participants in the sociology/anthropology workshops are conducting important research on a wide range of topics including ethnic identity and social movements in non-Russian republics, the response of the Russian diaspora to nationalist resurgence in non-Russian areas, and levels and trends in infant mortality in various republics.
A new fellowship program has also been created to complement the three long-standing multidisciplinary fellowship competitions for graduate training, dissertation write-up, and postdoctoral research. The first-year fellowship program, targeted at the disciplines of sociology and anthropology, enables universities to apply for institutional grants to fund incoming first-year graduate students with undergraduate Soviet area studies backgrounds. These fellowships are designed to build a cadre of scholars who are prepared to take advantage of new opportunities for sociological and anthropological research on the Soviet Union, and to address the many new agendas which have grown out of recent events there.
Finally, a new program of support for research and development in Soviet studies is designed to fund meetings, conferences, workshops, and pilot programs devoted to initiatives and innovations in the field. Proposals are accepted from all disciplines in the social sciences and humanities for seed grants which will allow organizers to focus ideas on a particular project and promote sustained participation.
The JCSS is particularly interested in funding projects which involve graduate students along with senior scholars, and Soviet scholars along with Western scholars. Among the projects funded to date, one has supported the development, for both American and Soviet researchers, of reliable statistical methods for assessing Soviet election results; and another, the preparation and publication of inventories of various archival materials from the pre-revolutionary and Soviet periods.
